definitions

TIMEEA: individual who ended up in the suburbs of Hangzhou when she was 20, expecting to find a 4000 years old civilization and instead ending up in the communist/capitalist, modern-day China.

This happened because one year prior, she decided to study both Chinese and Japanese to see how two different cultures developed around the the same writing system, the Chinese characters.

Needless to say, this individual has suffered from a chronic case of Orientalism, the cultural doctor said.

The TIM ORIENTALISM story starts from here.

ORIENTALISM: EDWARD SAID’S breakthrough theory from the book of the same name he wrote in 1978;

Orientalism, as Said puts it, basically means how people in “the West” simplify the people the people in “the East”.

Hate him or love him, the man started a whole new way of looking at the “Orient”.

“Orientalism” is a tale of stereotypes.

IF  Said’s Orientalism is about stereotypes, then TIM ORIENTALISM is about mine and how I overcome them.

Without further ado, allow me to properly introduce myself.

HI, I AM TIMEEA. There are many things I like, but among them, I like Chinese politics and Japanese media the best. WELCOME to TIMEEA’s ORIENTALISM, and how to overcome it!

Or TIM ORIENTALISM – for short.

"There are just two parts to learning Chinese and Japanese, Timeea," the cultural doctor said, "WHAT to know about them, and HOW to learn them."

“So in an Independent School, the WORKSHOPS should be about the WHAT. The CLASROOMS should be about the HOW”, the Cultural Doctor explained to me out of the blue one morning, without me really asking.

“… And the LIVE WEBINARS, if we were to have them?” If he insisted on sharing his wisdom, he should at least do it properly.

“For those not yet decided, who need guidance towards their choice.

And after a short pause he added:

…And you should send them an invitation via email, to properly introduce yourself, and get them acquainted with your method.”

“Fine, sure”, I said, “Whatever”, I added, to make sure I sound annoyed, while my inner voice shouted enthusiastically  “May the Independent School be about them all, and prosper! And let’s add some Daruma Dolls for good luck, too!”

HI, I AM TIMEEA. There are many things I like, but among them, I like Chinese politics and Japanese media the best. WELCOME to TIMEEA’s ORIENTALISM, and how to overcome it! (I tried calling it TIMORIENTALISM – for short, but nobody would call it that).

THAT PUTS CULTURE FIRST.

Because cultures aren’t only about grand civilizations of the past and fine arts, but also about day-to-day life and popular culture.

And while in some languages, communication is not affected by the specific cultural context, that is not the case with Chinese and Japanese.

Thus, not all languages are born equal.

IF Said’s Orientalism is about stereotypes, then TIM ORIENTALISM is about my own, my experiences, and how I overcome them.

what people are saying

How I quit my job, developed a new part of my brain, lived in Japan for 3 months and had the best experience of my life so far.

Was working in a small company when I got the chance to move to Tokyo, Japan, for 3 months. Out of respect for a new part of the world that I have never seen, and with the idea of the “Samurai Respect” in my head, I started taking Japanese classes with Timeea. I am not your regular student that can learn something by repetition or without the content making sense in my head. She has a passion for Japanese…well, everything, starting with politics and moving on to… you name it :). While teaching, she will give you tons of hints and information about their culture, food, way of thinking and living, and once you get the chance to see Japan, you will mention Timeea’s name a lot, as you will be able to discover everything she said.
